Our Ghosts

The 18th century ‘red lion on the green’ certainly has a paranormal history. Stories abound about ghostly activities in and around the pub, and these will be ratified by many of the regulars you will meet in the bar.

In past years these activities were of a more physical and sometimes violent nature. But nowadays our ghost is playful – he stands at the end of the bar waiting to be served, only to disappear when approached. He also switches on and off electrical appliances, usually at inconvenient times. Taps have been seen to be turned on and off of their own accord in the ladies toilet!

If you are fortunate enough to live here, you will see flashes of light in the upstairs corridor, and frequently hear footsteps. Areas of activity include the end of the bar near the restaurant entrance (did you feel a chill when you walked through?), the ladies toilet, and the corridor outside the ladies.

The South Staffs Ghost Club has recently carried out an over-night investigation, after a couple of their members detected a presence whilst having lunch at the red lion. They have confirmed the presence of not one, but two ghosts. A mischievous young boy who they believe is responsible for the poltergeist activity, and indeed our mysterious drinker who never gets served.

We hope this will not put you off your stay with us, but add to the character that is the ‘red lion on the green’.
